Goodness Gracious

So, if you haven't seen on the weather, it has been in the 90's here everyday. Today is supposed to be 94. Not to bad if we had air conditioning but WE DON'T! Okay so Maeve and I have been going places that have air. We went to school yesterday and today we are hitting up Barnes and Noble. I even bought a little pool for her (that will so be on the blog later). So last night, Kenyon and I had to figure something out. We couldn't put the poor girl in a swaddle that would literally overheat her. So, we tried feeding her, laying her in the crib and putting on her soother to help her fall asleep. We left the room and she watched the soother for a while. Then, after about five minutes, she was done with it. She started to cry a bit. We were following the stupid book that tells us how to let a child cry it out. We went in there wiped her face off, touched her stomach and was out in under a minute- never picking her up. When we left- boy was she angry! She screamed her little head off...choking, sobbing, hiccuping, you name it! So after another five minutes we went back in to check on her and saw her throwing up all over herself. I said- screw all of the "books" and I scooped her up. She continued to throw up on herself. Yeah, we won't be doing that again.

So, we waited about an hour, calmed her down. Then she started to get tired. Kenyon walked her around the room for a bit and got her to sleep. He was able to (I have no idea how) put her in the crib UNSWADDLED. She slept for three and a half hours UNSWADDLED! When we got up to feed and change her it was 1:20 in the morning and we were too tired to deal with trying to get her down again so we swaddled her (and it cooled off). So, that is a good start, right Dad??

Moral of the story: If you truly know your child and know their personality, don't rely on books to try and give you answers to your problems. They will just throw up.

Ok so what house in San Francisco doesn't have AC?? Just kidding! Yes, the cry it out method didn't work for us. For about 1 week when Maya was about 17 months, she wouldn't sleep in crib and would cry and cry and cry...then it ended! Thank GOD!

I agree...parenting books suck! Poor Maeve. Maybe now that she can roll over by herself, she will decide that a tummy is a great place to sleep.

Totally understand! I say forget the books and the let cry philosphy - do what you feel is right in your "Mommy gut". Babies are meant to be held, soothed, loved and swaddled by their parents arms. 28 years ago I listened to the doc's advice & regret it to this day. Fortunately the heat wave is over, the fog is at the Gate!
Yeah!!!
